Not only would this handsome card printed by the Forbes Company of Boston have been suitable for collection and pasting in a nice album, it also served as a receipt of the good purchased. It advertises, “The Celebrated PB & Co. Skirt” from the “Caldwell Woolen Mill.”
The lines on the bottom allowed the clerk to make note of which style skirt was purchased and the cost. The chromolithograph depicts a woman sitting in a dress-makers shop. A model is showing her the skirt which she’s about to purchase. I find this to be a lovely glimpse into a moment in time and a look at how a fashionable American lady of the late Nineteenth Century would have shopped for her clothes.
