Whenever Mr. Punch gets near a crowd of people, it seems that, despite his best efforts, things just don’t go well. Punch and Robert had very high hopes when they launched the Servants’ Ball. For the most part, everything was going well with the exception of an uncomfortable encounter with the Countess Hamish and Lady Constance.
While Gerard and Gamilla were getting closer, Robert and Punch had to endure the Countess Hamish’s unpleasant conversation as she was as rude as possible to Dr. Halifax and his companion. Later, unbeknownst to the doctor and the duke, Countess Hamish told her daughter that she’s best find Baron Lensdown and do as instructed or a child named Fern would suffer the consequences.
Punch and Robert spent some time talking about Colin and Punch shared that he was afraid Colin would take after his birth mother—Julian’s sister. Robert reassured Punch that Colin would grow to be a fine man. Punch wondered if Mrs. North hadn’t figured out that Colin was really his nephew and Robert agreed that she probably had. They then went in search of Gamilla and Gerard so they could have the cake-cutting ceremony.
Though they’d had some time alone, Gerard and Gamilla’s romantic evening didn’t last as she was interrupted by The Baroness Lensdown who was looking for her husband. The baroness turned out to be a very nice woman and praised Gamilla for her beauty. Mr. Punch and Robert joined the three on the veranda and welcomed the baroness to join them inside. The baroness was irritated to know that Finlay had been talking to her husband, but softened with Punch’s charm and kindness.
Meanwhile, the youngsters—Ethel, Jenny and Georgie—were very much enjoying the party. Dancing and drinking, they teased one another playfully. As they wondered if they shouldn’t have more to drink, Finlay appeared, dressed as the devil and offered them some of his private whiskey. Now—just what could Finlay be up to?
As the evening wore down, Punch and Robert admitted that Colin should be taken to bed. Since Mrs. North had volunteered to watch the boy so the younger members of the staff could stay at the party, Punch handed the baby over to the housekeeper.
Or did he?
The woman in Mrs. North’s costume was certainly not the Grange’s longtime housekeeper. Have Punch and Robert just handed their boy into evil hands? What’s Ellen’s game this time? And, where is the real Mrs. North.
This week, things become even more complicated for Punch and Robert as the baron, Ellen, and Finlay all work together and against one another to ruin the Duke of Fallbridge. Make sure not to miss a chapter. If you do, however, you know you can catch up in the Chapter Archive.
