Antique Image of the Day: Stamp it Out, 1940

Fire Prevention Poster
Tom Eckersley, OBE, 1940
The Victoria & Albert Museum

This poster dating to 1940 was designed to encourage safety at work. The very modern design depicts a black lace-up work shoe and a smoldering cigarette butt. At the top of the poster, a slogan in large black letters reads, “Stamp it out.” Below the image, “Prevent Fire” is printed in black and red.

The artist has signed, “Eckersley'”in the lower right corner of the poster. This is Tom Eckersley (OBE, 1914-1996). The poster was created for the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (part of the Ministry of Labour and National Service) and printed by Loxley Bros., Ltd.
