Sunday Viewing: Jeeves and Wooster

P.G. Wodehouse introduced the world to free-spirited socialite Bertie Wooster and his “gentleman’s gentleman,” Reginald Jeeves in 1917 with the popular book series that he wrote until 1974. While several film adaptations of Wodehouse’s “Jeeves” stories have been produced, none are finer than the ITV production starring Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie which ran from 1990-1993. The chemistry and impeccable comic timing of Fry and Laurie breathe a believable life into Wodehouse’s beloved characters. The two men were already a celebrated double act when cast as “Jeeves” and “Wooster.” Laurie portrays Bertie Wooster as a loveable (but often dimwitted) gentleman who, often through his own devices, ends up in a series of hilarious scrapes from which only his loyal and intelligent valet, Jeeves (Fry), can extricate him. With smart costumes, beautiful locations and an extremely talented cast of supporting players, Jeeves and Wooster offers hours of entertainment. Now available on DVD, you can welcome loveable Bertie and long-suffering Jeeves into your home for an enjoyable afternoon.

I suspect that your own Bertie is not related by blood or intellect to Wodehouse's hero. I remember this series and it really was brilliant.

No, while my Bertie has some similar traits, he has Jeeve's common sense, too. It really was a great series.
