Benjamin West, 1799

Benjamin West (1738-1820) is notable as the first American-born artist to gain international renown. He famously was appointed as Historical Painter to King George III and was granted the position of the second President of the Royal Academy.

West was decidedly ambitious and, in many ways, ruthless in his pursuit of prestige. Later in life, both he and his work became affected by a melodramatic grandiosity which was both charming and repulsive.

Upon his death, he left behind a legacy of nearly 750 paintings of which only about thirty were landscapes. Therefore, this canvas from 1799 is particularly special. Entitled, “A View of Snow Hill, Windsor Great Park” depicts West himself, at the left, sketching. He is joined by his friend and companion, James Dyer, a former soldier in the Horse Guards who would later become a life model at the Royal Academy Schools. Furthermore, Dyer served as West's valet for fifty years. This painting is one of a group of seven views in and around Windsor which were created by West. West rented a house in Windsor, circa 1780, in large part because he had been commissioned for a series of paintings in the Royal Chapel in Windsor Castle.

Father Christmas Through the Ages: A Christmas Card from 1890

The Victoria & Albert Museum

This week, we're going to enjoy some depictions of Saint Nicholas/Father Christmas/Santa Claus, etc. as his image has developed over the centuries.

This Christmas card from England in 1890 is of portrait proportions with a left-hand fold and deckled edges. The face shows an embossed head and shoulders
depiction of Father Christmas above the word "GREETING."

Inside, the card reads:

"All kind wishes for the SEASON
May you have a Christmas
Full of mirth and glee:
Yet amid your gladness
Think sometimes of me"

The card is signed "To Amy from Daisy"

Back on track

Okay...I think I am back on track.  Granted, I am tied to them, and the tracks lead the Canonball Express from Pixley to Hooterville, but still...

So...I think tomorrow, we will do lovely things like revisit Thanks-a-ma-giving,  and rejoin our pals in "A Recipe for Punch."  We will also start doing Christmas-y things, and, likely look at some jewelry or fans or snuff boxes or the kinds of other things I like to trot out.

I have some very lovely old things in the virtual attic for you this week, and, unless Benjamin Franklin reaches out from the grave again to give his kite a big ol' yank, I think we should be all set.

And, mmmmm... food.

Until then...say "hey" to Mama and them...

Something about Lightning and a Key

Hello all...

From 10:00 A.M. until just now, my power has been out.

No power.  No blog.  No HEAT, so no shower.  No hot food,  no nothin'.

Bertie has been at the spa, so, he got a hot bath, at least.

Bear with me whilst I figure out what I am doing.

What a kerfuffle.

One of the Best Reasons to Be Thankful

Today, don't forget to let your pets know how much joy they bring to your life.

Don't We All Wish For Hazel?

If not everyday, at least to clean up after dinner today.

(By the way, iPad users may have had some trouble viewing today's videos.  I don't know why.  That's what I get for posting at 2 in the morning.  However, the kerfuffle is fixed now.  Enjoy the bounty of vintage weirdness.)
