Prince Albert often supervised the design of Queen Victoria’s jewels. She once wrote in her diary, “Albert has such taste and arranges everything for me about my jewels.” Having researched Queen Victoria’s enormous collection of jewels for many years, I will concur with the Queen’s assessment. Albert did an excellent job.

Did not this tiara have opal originally instead of rubies? I think Prince Albert chose opals for this beauty....
Yes, actually, you are correct. This version of the circlet is a modified version, the result of changes made by Queen Alexandra. The original circlet was larger by six arches and did, in fact, feature opals where there are now rubies. A parure of opals and diamonds was made for Queen Victoria to wear with this tiara.
