Match Case by Michael Perchin, c. 1896 Crown Copyright The Royal Collection Image Courtesy of: Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II |
This match case of gunmetal, two-color gold and cord was made by Michael Perchin for Fabergé before 1896. The case was purchased by the Prince of Wales (later Edward VII). The case is a rare example of the use of non-precious metals by Fabergé. This choice was due to the rough treatment the match case would receive during use. The gunmetal has been made elegant with the application of rococo scrolls in two-color gold.
