This image of Prince Albert is based upon a portrait of the Prince Consort painted by Franz Xaver Winterhalter which depicts His Majesty in his garter robes wearing the Star of the Order of the Garter and a bright red cravat.
The portrait has been recreated on an oval porcelain plaque by Minton and Company. Interestingly, this is one of several such plaques which were hand-painted by female students at Minton who were learning their trade. This would have greatly pleased the Prince who was much interested in education and particularly in the education of Britain’s young ladies.
