I found this handsome portrait in a Dallas antique shop sans frame. It is unsigned and undated, but clearly quite antique. I would guess by the look of the reverse of the canvas, the sitter’s costume and the craquelure that this was painted in England somewhere between 1870-1900.
Though I don’t know much about the provenance, and I don’t know who the artist is, I love the painting nonetheless. We should surround ourselves with art that pleases us regardless of the details. I think this gentleman’s pleasant smile is worth more than a signature.
