To Serve and Project: The Mermaid Tureen, 17th C.

German modelers in the Seventeenth Century often incorporated figures mythological creatures into their works. Take, for example, this tureen and cover of lead-glazed earthenware in the form of a mermaid. Fired with brown glaze, the cover is surmounted by a yellow lion holding a shield.
