Object of the Day: A Sapphire and Diamond Stickpin

As Edwardian styles transitioned into the more geometric patterns of the Art Deco, jewelry designers began to embrace the contrasting beauty of diamonds and sapphires. Deep blue sapphires began to find themselves set against fields of white gold, nestled between the cool shimmer of white diamonds.

This stickpin from 1915-1925 shows that burgeoning love of contrasts and the emergence of geometric compositions. Set in white gold, two princess-cut sapphires, set at angles, gleam a brilliant blue between two sparkling diamonds. A gentleman could have worn this in the day or the evening. The understated elegance of this piece would have matched any outfit in a gentleman’s wardrobe.
