This three-quarter-length, hand-colored lithograph depicts mid-Nineteenth Century actress Louisa Cranstoun Nisbett in the title role of “Zarah.” She is shown in an off-the-shoulder white blouse under a crimson gown which is snuggly fitted at the bodice. A green scarf, trimmed with gold tassels adorns her head and flows over her left shoulder. Heavy gold bracelets grace both of her wrists.
In her right hand, she holds a gleaming knife which is explained by the caption below the image which reads "My hand is readier to the Knife-than my tongue to words of anger.”
This image was published by the firm of McLean & Haes and is the work of Richard James Lane.
