"Portrait from Life" Ross and Thomson, 1849 Crown Copyright The Royal Collection Image Courtesy of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II |
This photograph dates to 1849 and is one of a group of photos given to the Queen, who had been fascinated by the merging technology, by the photographers James Ross and John Thomson.
The photograph depicts an elderly gentleman, seated, reading a book. The man rests his right hand underneath his chin. By this point in the Nineteenth Century, the fashion for images in full profile had begun to wane. The subject has been posed so that he faces three-quarters left. His dark suit and tie contrast his bright white shirt, showing the depth of the medium.
