Obscure Book of the Day: Royal Romances: Queen Victoria & Prince Albert
The first meeting of these cousins was not such a success, but the next time they met, Queen Victoria was enchanted with German Prince Albert of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha—much to the relief of her maternal uncle Leopold, King of the Belgians, who had long tried to arrange the union.
The marriage of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert has been greatly romanticized over the past century—especially by Victoria herself upon her premature widowhood at the age of forty-two. However, the two did have a deep affection and devotion and enjoyed a marriage based on love and mutual respect.
The third book in the 1990 “Royal Romances: The Love Affairs that Shaped History,” discusses the romance of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert from their early years to their meeting and marriage and, finally, to Victoria’s long period of mourning.
