Shawl Shetland, 1866 After an original made for Princess Alexandra in 1863 The Victoria & Albert Museum |
Made in Shetland of fine cream wool, this knitted, openwork shawl boasts decorative mesh boarders with motifs of symbols of the empire. This shawl is a duplicate of one made for Princess Alexandra in 1863 as a gift for her marriage to the Prince of Wales (later Edward VII).
This shawl—exact in every detail—was meant to serve as a representation of the gift made to the then-Princess and was designed to be displayed for public viewing.
