When working with other people as a team, it’s important to remember that the overall goal has more value than the individuals involved. Let’s use the example of a particular Prime Time reality show dance competition. How many times do we see the professional dancer try to steal focus from his or her “celebrity” contestant? It’s unseemly and uncomfortable to watch one member of the team mug for the camera and try to be the center of attention.
The same applies to the rest of us. Though few of us are being broadcast on live television, we all occasionally have to work with other people as a unit. In those instances, it’s not the triumph of one part of the team that matters; it’s the victory of the team as a whole.
We all have skills and strengths. Bring those to the competition of life—all the while remembering that you’re not the star, but simply a member of the cast.
