Emerald and Diamond Brooch Garrards Bequeathed to Queen Elizabeth II, 1953 The Royal Collection |
Presented to Queen Mary at the Delhi Durbar, by “The Ladies of India,” this gorgeous brooch was created specifically for the Queen by those wonderful fellows at Garrards. The brooch sports an enormous emerald which is carved with a rose on the front and a rose bush on the back. The entire piece is surrounded in stunning brilliant-cut diamonds, set in gold.
Upon Queen Mary’s passing, she bequeathed this eye-popper to her granddaughter, Queen Elizabeth II.

This is a very beautiful and unique piece. The rose carved on the front appears almost 'Tudor' in appearance. This is an unusual way for a gem to be cut; the choice may have been influenced by the 'gem quality of the emerald itself. Emeralds sometimes have cracks/flaws running through them; this is particularly common in large stones. However a skillful cutter can still make such a stone into a masterpeice and this may be an example.
The cut of the diamonds in this broach is also classic. These sort of facets appear in other jewellery from the 1950s (even the costume jewellery) and make peices from this era dazzling even today.
What a beautiful brooch!
Isn't it, Darcy? I wouldn't mind wearing that myself!
Yes, SherR, it is rather Tudor-ish.
