Object of the Day: Veiled Planet

Masters of capturing both the terrestrial and the heavenly in their beautiful art glass, the glass-makers at California’s Correia Studios, often use ethereal imagery in their line of paperweights.  This large weight called, “Veiled Planet” reminds us of Saturn—with a twist.  A watery planet veined with icy lands is engulfed in a glittering atmospheric layer which itself is embraced by a delicate cobalt blue ring.  The workmanship is exceptional and shows the cleverness of Correia Studios and their ability to make dreams a glittering reality.

Object of the Day: “Clear Moon and Sea” by Correia Art Glass

I’ve always had a fondness for the designs of California-based Correia Art Glass. Their sophisticated designs often rely on silhouettes and contrasting colors and usually have their roots in organic elements.

This oversized paperweight, entitled, “Clear Moon and Sea” was created by Correia Studios in 1988. The contrast between the royal blue shadow of the moon and the exposed crescent creates a sense of stark drama over the gently breaking waves below it. Another layer of crystal beneath the surface represents the curve of the earth and adds an element of sparkling infinity to the piece as a whole. It’s truly an ingenious composition.

Object of the Day: A Paperweight by Correia Art Glass

This morning, we’re taking a rare trip into the modern, showing that the pride and artistry of the Belle Époque has been able to survive in contemporary art forms. As I’ve mentioned before, for the past twenty-three years, I’ve collected paperweights. The collection contains items of both traditional and modern examples.

This gem by California-based Correia Studios is signed by the artist and was created in the late 1980’s. A solid crystal sphere of two-tone gold striped has been sliced to reveal three windows into a mystical scene. The glass blower has delicately created a billowing cup of glittering amethyst, scarlet, cobalt and emerald above which a delicate silver bubble hovers. The intricacy of this design is astonishing and the skill of the artist is evident in this complicated technique.
Correia Art Glass produces some of the finest contemporary works of its kind. Known for their bold designs, remarkable skill and rich colors, this studio continues to show us that the spirit of the Belle Époque is alive and thriving.
