Mr. Punch's Puzzles: The Riddle of the Week

Once, again, Mr. Punch, with my help, is offering up a true Victorian riddle.  The first person to answer correctly--by posting in the comments--will receive public congratulations.

So, here's this week's riddle.  We ask that you don't Google the answer.  Mr. Punch would not find that sporting at all.  Give it a shot and see what you can come up with.  Here we go... No cheating...

I am as useful to the nation,
As some who move in higher station;
And fraught with virtues deem'd inherent,
May well be call'd the king's vicegerent, [sic]
As I his subjects render stronger,
And die that they may live the longer.

And, the answer is...

AN OX or OXEN.

Now, there's something most of us think about every day.  Kudos to Dashwood for saying "Cow" which is a similar kind of creature, at least.  And, Gene, Angelo, Darcy, Matt and Carolyn had great answers, too.  Well, actually--you all had some fun and clever answers.  Thanks for playing!  Come back next Friday for another of Mr. Punch's Puzzles!

The railroad?

Ooooohhhh...very clever. But, not the answer I was looking for. Good job, however!

I was going to say the steam engine.

Also an historically clever answer. You're all smarter than the original author.

The vote?

A timely and intelligent answer, Angelo. Well done.

Mr. Mayer.

Victorian Mr. Mayer made 1930s Mr. Mayer look like a lamb. A meth-addicted lamb.

The flag.

Interesting answer.

Darcy said...

Sliced bread.
. (More specifically Wonder Bread they used to say " it helps build strong bodies 12 ways")

The crown.

Also a good answer.

Very good, Darcy!

Chickens. Nice tasty chickens who give their lives to sustain commoner and king. And they make as much sense as Parliament.

Of course, the same can be said of cows, fish, pigs and sheep.

or Leeches.

But not goats.

Very thorough and close.
