Card of the Day: H.M. King George V Wearing the Royal Robe and Stole

Originally called the “loros,” the Royal Stole is a cloth (sometimes of gold) that is worn over the Royal robes after the coronation. These two garments are traditionally an important part of the coronation ceremony and have been employed for centuries.

Here, we see King George V in the Royal Robe and Stole upon the day of his coronation in 1911. Is it just me or does ol’ George look terribly uncomfortable? Like St. Edward’s Crown (which George V wore at his coronation as opposed to his grandmother and father who deemed it too heavy), the robe and stole are both quite heavy and cumbersome. This is evidenced by George’s expression.

Can you even imagine enduring those *pounds* of clothing, in the 100°+ temps we've had all summer? Hopefully that was taken in to account, and all coronations were held in the winter! He does look a bit as though he is teetering beneath all that weight!
