Mr. Punch and Robert, after having just endured the murder of their kitchen maid, find more trouble at their doorstep--literally--with the arrival of a foe they encountered in America. Ulrika Rittenhouse, the eldest child of a wealthy Louisiana family, had made their time in America all the more miserable. This strange woman with a penchant for bloodshed also had a proclivity for joining cults. And, this time, she seems to have joined a cult called "The Fifty," devoted to the fifty ancient demons. Ulrika believes that Orpha's son, Marduk, is the new "messiah" and she's going to do whatever it takes to see the two-headed baby raised properly and wed to his half-sister, Fern.
Speaking of Fern, thanks to Eudora Stover, Fern was able to escape with Lady Constance. Constance, however, felt she was being punished for her sins and hanged herself, sending her daughter to the Duke of Fallbridge with a letter pleading Mr. Punch and Robert to take the girl in. Of course, Punch and Robert open their home to the girl, even giving her Robert's last name and devising a story that she's a distant cousin of Robert's. Fern's been through quite a lot, however, and it may not have left her in good mental condition. Nonetheless, Fern bonds with Ethel, and the two comfort one another.
Eudora also released Lady Lendsown's children as well as her own. This, but especially the news that Fern was gone, angered not only Orpha, but also Ulrika. Johnny Donnan found Eudora and Hortence murdered and rushed to the Duke to tell him. What's worse, Ulrika has a scheme to buy the lease on Lady Constance's house on Belgrave Square. There goes the neighborhood!
