Mastery of Design: A DEAREST Ring, 1873

DEAREST Ring
Birmingham, 1873
Rowan and Rowan

This 15 karat gold ring is hallmarked for Birmingham, 1873.  With an engraved shank and galleried setting, the jewel is set in the sentimental acrostic manner with the first letter of each stone’s name spelling “dearest.”  This technique was also used to spell other words of love such as “Adore,” and “Regard.”  In fact, the majority of such rings spell “Regard.”  This was also utilized in other jewels such as brooches and necklaces.

The gemstones here are the traditional diamond, emerald, amethyst, ruby, emerald, sapphire and turquoise.
