Seaside Joys 1900-1910 Louis Wain The Victoria & Albert Museum |
This drawing of Indian ink, watercolor and gouache on toned paper by Louis William Wain (1860-1939) was created between 1900 and 1910 and was intended to be reproduced as a picture postcard.
The image depicts kittens playing on a beach—being photographed by another car. Two of the kitten are show sitting inside sand castles while a boat floats lazily in the background.
Such images were meant to be used on postcards which would be sent from seaside towns to encourage the growing trend of the early Twentieth Century toward brief holidays on the English seaside.
The drawing which is signed “Louis Wain” was produced for the famed postcard printer Raphael Tuck & Sons, Ltd.
