Card of the Day: H.R.H. The Duke of Connaught and Strathearn
Prince Arthur, the Duke of Connaught and Strathearn, was the seventh child and third son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. With a long and distinguished military career, the Duke survived well into the Second World War. He died in 1942 and was Queen Victoria’s last remaining child. Throughout his lifetime he served his mother, the Queen, his nephew, King Edward VII, his great-nephew King George V and his great-great nephew, King George VI.
The Duke of Connaught and Strathearn is commemorated in the set of cigarette cards by Godfrey and Phillips which were produced for the Silver Jubilee of King George V and Queen Mary. The Duke was of great assistance to George V during the First World War and came out of retirement to advise King George VI during the Second World War.
