Object of the Day: A Derby Porcelain Figure of Britannia, 1765-1770

Britannia
Derby Porcelain 1765-1770
The Victoria &Albert Museum
Typical of Derby Porcelain of the late Eighteenth Century, here we see a figure of Britannia rendered in soft-paste porcelain, painted in enamels and gilded.

The figure surmounts a low Rococo scroll base adorned with trophies, a flag and a lion couchant behind her. Originally, the figure raised a trident in her right hand, but this has since been lost. Her left hand rests on an oval shield, supported on the lion's head. Upon the shield, painted in brown are the crosses of the Union Jack.
