This peculiar image from the
Royal Collection was photographed in 1871 by English photographers Hill and Saunders. Here we see Prince Ernest Louis of Hesse in a darling little kilt, neatly posed, but facing the wrong way. The son of Princess Alice (third daughter of Queen Victoria) and Grand Duke Louis IV, Ernest Louis was known affectionately as “Ernie.” This photograph was taken during a visit to Windsor Castle while his mother was at Sandringham helping to nurse his brother, The Prince of Wales, through a serious bought of Typhoid Fever. Clearly, “Ernie” is distracted by the absence of his mother and brother. The tender humanity of this photograph is priceless.
