Figure of the Day: The Tithe Pig, 1765

The Tithe Pig
Derby Porcelain
1765
The Victoria & Albert Museum

This figural group by Derby, England’s William Duesbury & Co is entitled “The Tithe Pig.”  A work of soft-paste porcelain, it is painted with enamels, and depicts a farmer's wife offering her baby to a clergyman in payment of tithe (in this instance, a religious contribution of money, but a compulsory one), instead of a pig which is held by her husband.

I suppose in 1765, when this was made, babies were easier to come by than pigs.
