Something Borrowed: The “Halo” Tiara

The Scroll Tiara
After much speculation about whether or not the former Katherine Middleton would wear a tiara as she walked down the marble aisle of Westminster Abbey, we got our answer today when the Duchess of Cambridge emerged from her limousine wearing an historic piece from the collection of Queen Elizabeth II.

The “Halo” Tiara is, I am fairly convinced, also known as “The Scroll Tiara.” Made by Cartier in 1936, this exquisite diamond tiara was purchased by the Duke of York (later, King George VI) for his wife, Elizabeth (later affectionately known as “The Queen Mother"). He presented the tiara to Elizabeth just three weeks before he ascended to the throne, replacing his abdicating brother, King Edward VIII. The Queen Mother presented the tiara to Princess Elizabeth (now Queen Elizabeth II) as a gift for her eighteenth birthday.

This beautiful piece of history was given new life this morning as it graced the head of Princess Catherine of Wales.

I should note that there is some debate as to the actual name of this tiara.  The official site of the British Monarchy refers to it as "The Halo," however many who study these things know it as "The Scroll."  Some feel that the tiara Katherine wore today is different than the "Scroll" tiara, but another created by Cartier in a similar style.  The Queen Mother owned over a dozen tiaras and this was a style which was popular in the 1930's.  I'll let you all look at the pictures and decide for yourselves barring any official identification between the two.  Regardless, it is a lovely diadem and was perfect for the Duchess.

Just a note on this- where she was called "Princess Catherine of Wales" that never was and never would have been her name anyway, even if Prince WIlliam had not been made the Duke of Cambridge. Take for example the Prince and Princess Michael of Kent- being of non- royal status his wife could be not called "Princess Marie" as she became royal by marriage and therefore her title reflects that- If she had been born as HRH Princess Maria von Reibnitz instead of just a Baroness then she could be called by her actual name. Instead Kate upon marriage because HRH the Duchess of Cambrige- NOT even "Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge" or "Duchess Catherine" are her correct "public" names or titles. She is to be called the Duchess of Cambridge only, just as the royals technically do not need a last name (their house name such as Windsor, or location such as "of Wales" and the title of Prince is all they need) they also do not need to have a any other name besides their title, while we see in Kate. If not named as the Duke of Cambridge on his wedding day, Kate's name would have become HRH the Princess WIlliam of Wales. But NEVER EVER would she have been Princess Katherine! Being able to use the PRincess along with your given name is a right reserved exclusively for those born of the royal blood. And no matter how many times the media said it there was never any Princess Diana, she was first the HRH THE Princess of Wales and upon divorce lost the HRH and took the same form of address as divorced members of the aristocracy had taken, giving her the name of Diana, Princess of Wales- THAT gave her her real name back to use again. And interesting fact that also made her the ONLY person in history to have the legal title of "Princess" attached to her name (as it came fter her actual name shows it was a courtesy and not birthright)- She is the only person ever to be a non-royal (to hold anywhere in her name the title of)Princess. She was declared upon divorce, that even though NOT a member of the royal family legally, but as the mother of the second and third in line to the throne, she was to continue to be treated as such and would still be expected to attend certain royal functions that her children would be required at as well from time to time- and she did not lose her precedence she was still in that rank of the thrid highest status woman in the nation (after the QUeen and the QUeen Mother)

I collect tiaras, most of which are replicas of actual historical tiaras.

That's NOT a photo of the Cartier Scrolls Halo Tiara. It's a photo of the EGYPTIAN LOTUS Halo Tiara.

Look at it closely. It consists of Egyptian lotus/papyrus flowers, which are completely different from the scrolls in the tiara that Kate (and the Queen Mother and Princesses Margaret and Anne) wore.

This is a very common error, which kerps getting recirculated on Pinterest and other online sites. Unfortunately, the more an error gets shared, the more it gets reinforced as "fact".
