Object of the Day: An Antique Peridot Stickpin

Gems are the very best of nature—representing a brilliant range of colors which reflects all the hues of the earth and gives them a permanent presence. Jewelers have the ability to heighten a stone’s natural beauty and make it the best it can possibly be.

I love this peridot stickpin with its brilliant, springy, grass-green sparkle. Set into a carved, pierced white gold setting which mimics a frame of diamonds, the stone’s color is the real showstopper.

In the 1880’s when this pin was crafted, gentlemen were still accessorizing their wardrobe with stickpins which not only matched their cravat and waistcoat, but also complemented the season, the event they were attending and the time of day. This vividly colored stickpin would have secured the cravat during a stroll in the country or while judging the flowers at the County Fair. It speaks of springtime and new beginnings.
