Object of the Day: A Sampler from the Silver Jubilee of King George V and Queen Mary, 1935

This was another birthday gift from my mother and father. Made by a woman in Dorset to celebrate the Silver Jubilee of King George V and Queen Mary, this beautiful sampler is signed simply, “I. Pugh.”

The sampler features the gold carriage and guards as well as the emblems of the Rose (England) and Thistle (Scotland), but curiously leaves out Ireland’s clover. Perhaps Mrs. Pugh had some issues. Who knows?

In 1935, many Britons were producing works such as this to mark the Silver Jubilee of their beloved King and Queen. I’m always happy to find that some still survive and will make sure that this one sticks around for another seventy-five years so that Mrs. Pugh’s work was not for naught.
