Object of the Day: An Antique Sterling Mr. Punch Pin Tray, 1893

For my birthday this year, my parents presented me with something very special and wonderful. This sterling silver pin tray was made by Edward Durban & Company of Frederick Street, Birmingham, England in 1893.

In pristine condition, this remarkable tray, in stunning repoussé, depicts the inaugural cover of “Punch Magazine.” The Magazine, founded in 1841 by Mark Lemon and Henry Mayhew, launched with this cover showing Mr. Punch and Dog Toby. Punch is making Toby pose for a portrait, but in typical Punch fashion, he paints himself instead of Toby. Figures swirl around the scene in parade fashion, and beneath Punch’s desk, a miniature of himself rides a donkey or possibly Hector the Horse.

The pin tray is an exact copy of the cover. I can’t believe the amazing condition of this tray! Clearly, it was never used for its intended purpose. And, now, I will ensure it remains untouched.

What a wonderful way to celebrate 38 years on Earth!
